A Different Approach to a Traditional Home Library
The Christian County Library’s Outreach Department has been providing an invaluable service for over a decade, delivering library materials to those with mobility or visual impairments.
The Home Delivery program is designed to build community and ensure that all Christian County residents, regardless of physical limitations, have access to the library’s extensive collection of audiobooks, books, magazines and movies.
The process begins with a one-on-one conversation between staff and patrons to discuss their preferences, including the types and formats of materials as well as favorite authors and genres. The Outreach staff carefully selects items from the library’s collection, packs them up, and delivers them every Wednesday. The following month, they return with new materials while picking up the previous month’s items.
This essential service is available at no charge to any resident of Christian County who has an active library card with a permanent or temporary mobility or visual impairment. And how do we know it’s important? They tell us!
“This program is like having Christmas every month.” — Anne H.
“You don’t know how much these deliveries mean to me.” — Patsy H.
“Thank you for bringing books to my mother and me. You are so appreciated!” — William O.
If you or a loved one would like to join the Home Delivery program, please complete the application available on the library’s website or call and speak with a member of the Outreach Department at 417-724-6100.
Each month, Outreach staff drive 160 miles across Christian County to deliver about 300 materials. In 2024, over 3,300 items were transported to 280 homes. This service wouldn’t be possible without the help of library volunteers who assist with pulling, sorting and packing materials for delivery. If you want to make a difference in someone’s life, consider volunteering! For more information and to apply, email outreach@christiancountylibrary.org.
