What’s the Must-Have School Supply this Year? A Library Card!

It’s the key to worldwide exploration, and it fits in your pocket. Each September, the Christian County Library collaborates with preschools, daycares, elementary, middle and high schools across the county for National Library Card Sign-Up Month. The goal of this initiative is to increase library access for families.

Throughout the month, library card applications are distributed to teachers and librarians, who then pass them out to students who wish to participate. The completed applications are taken home, completed by a parent or guardian, and returned to the schools for processing. The schools with the highest percentage of new library card applications completed receive money to purchase materials.

Which schools had the highest percentage of new library card sign-ups for 2025? Espy Elementary in Nixa achieved the highest rate, followed closely by Summit Intermediate in Nixa and Ozark Middle School.

The money will go towards the listening center, which includes audiobooks and headphones,” said Jordan Knapp, librarian at Espy Elementary, as she accepted $300 gift provided by the Friends of the Christian County Library (FOL). “We’ve found that those who aren’t great readers become invested once they hear the stories read aloud,” Principal Karrie Long added.

Summit Intermediate and Ozark Middle School also received funds to purchase library materials.

Providing funds for the School Library Card Drive aligns with one of the primary goals of the FOL, which is to raise public awareness of library services. Fundraisers and book sales are means to provide support for the library’s early literacy initiatives, such as this,” Lonnie Brandon, President of the FOL, said.

Honorable mentions go to Spokane Little Owls and Nixa Early Learning Center. Each received funds from the Friends of the Library for their participation. A total of $700 in donations was given to schools by the FOL.
